SMITH, WILLIAM, -- Augusta Co., Va., Feb 25, 1833: b. Staunton, July 22, 1763; his father moved to Amherst when declarant was young; declarant returned to Augusta in 1825; drafted latter part of 1777 or early in 1778 & marched from Amherst as privated under Capt. David Shelton to guard British & Hessian prisoners captured at Saratoga; served another tour of 1 mo. at the Barracks; 1781, under Capt. James Barnett, Lt. John Woodroff, Col. Charles Dabney of Hanover.
While stationed at Wiliamsburg, a soldier at the Half Way House announced that he had seen the British a few miles from camp, when declarant's & several other making any resistance.
They were delivered to Gen. Steuben at Willimsburg, where declarant was discharged.
Drafted late in April under Capt. Richard Taliaferro, Lt. Charles Eades, Col. Meriwether, Gen. Stevens' Brig., & while stationed at Malbon Hills marched to Hot Water to reinforce Gen. Wayne; arrived during the fight & was in the battle.
Was not discharged until after harvest.
